Review

Watch the Skies is a surprising yet delightful read. We've long wondered about aliens and alien invasions, and here Tanith Davenport gave us her take on things. I've heard about paranormal societies and their activities, and wondered if there are people who are really that passionate about aliens that they'll go looking for encounters. Apparently there are.

And apparently, these aliens are curious about human mating behavior. Aster and Wade did their part to provide the aliens with sex education, and in that way, also opened up to each other about their mutual attraction. If the aliens hadn't come by, would these two ever act on it? Aster wasn't what Wade was used to, as she was more aggressive than the women he'd dated, and Aster also questions whether she was what Wade wanted. I felt their romance would've benefited from more development, but I understand that it's not possible due to the short length of the story.

Upon thinking back, I realized there's a disconnect between what the aliens really came for and what Aster thought they wanted. So, why were Aster and Wade compelled to have sex for the aliens to watch, when it's not what they're really after? Were they taking notes for when they have alien sex?

That said, I love the twist in the story--I wasn't observant enough for that, as the author did drop some clues/hints about it. Watch the Skies is perfect for a short afternoon read.

She wants him. He wants her. They want to watch.
Alien hunter Aster is frustrated in more ways than one. Her team hasn't had a proper encounter in months, and her cute teammate Wade is never going to see her that way - and no other man would let a woman like Aster take charge in a relationship anyway.
Until one night, out in the woods, when the team is engulfed in a white light - and overwhelmed with desire like they've never known. Suddenly Aster sees a new side to Wade, one that will let her give her alpha tendencies free rein...
But as the creatures they met return again and again, Aster begins to wonder what they really want - to see her and Wade together, or something more sinister?

Cold settled on her, light breezes stirring her hair. This was the worst part of a vigil. She much preferred collecting data, testing samples and finding alternative explanations. Or not, of course. On a good night, there wasn't one. But just sitting and waiting for events to repeat themselves...

Wait. A light had appeared in the sky.

Hagar's hand landed on Aster's wrist. Aster lifted her hand slightly to acknowledge the touch. A plane, maybe? A shooting star? No, it's too bright. This is closer to us.

The undergrowth rustled. Annah was kneeling, holding up her camera to film the light as it moved. As they watched it split into two lights, then three, moving closer.

Aster's heart stood still. Have we actually got a real encounter here? Her scalp prickled, as though her hair was standing on end. Automatically she slid a hand up to rub the spot, keeping her eyes on the lights. It wasn't imaginary, her hair was standing on end.

Hagar was staring at her, mouth gaping as Aster stared back, running her fingers along the rainbow-streaked locks that were straining away from her head.

What the hell?

There was a sudden blaze of light from behind them and Annah yelped. Oh God!

A broad beam of golden light fell through the trees, forming a circle on the ground. In the centre Annah was half standing, half arching backwards, camera still pointing straight up in the air, her mouth stretched in a rictus of shock.

"Annah!" Zack shouted from somewhere to the right, but Annah didn't react. Her eyes were fixed on something above, something outside the golden glow. Then she let out a guttural moan and dropped to her knees, her free hand clasped to the zip of her jeans.

Aster rolled onto her back and scrambling into a sitting position. But before she could get up, a wave of sensation rolled over her, knocking her flat on the ground.

Oh...

Her eyes rolled back into her head as a rush of desire surged through her body, her back arching as every inch of her skin began to tingle and inside her head words were echoing. Echoing in a language she had never heard and yet somehow understood deep in her core.

You want.

You want.

You want.

She closed her eyes against the feeling, but the glow was still there, seeping into her mind. Biting her lip, she struggled to think, struggled to work out what was happening. It was impossible. She was overwhelmed by lust and light. Somewhere in the distance she could hear Annah still moaning, hear the scrabbling noise of feet in the undergrowth. She heard Hagar gasping beside her and the deeper groans of Zack a little further away... and further still, Wade. The name rang in her head and for a moment the image it conjured sent a stab of desire through her gut.

Wade. Wade. Wade.

Then, as she arched her back again, the ground was gone and so was her mind.

When she came to again, the light was fading. Dark shapes moved at the edges of her vision. Metal. Something metal underneath me. It was nothing like she had ever seen before and yet what it resembled most was a surgical bed. She was lying face down on a surgical bed. Naked. The lingering excitement she still felt began to dissipate as reality set in.

I've been abducted.
